I suspect a lot of people didn't like the theme. The most common complaint about Attila is about "optimisation" but that's not been a game killer for me, and it seem you neither. I prefer to turtle, so the idea of starting big (albeit massively overextended) as the Romans and the world trying to conquer you was very appealing. I find the normal TW campaign of starting small and conquering the world a bit dull. But the game is deep (particularly the campaign level), challenging and very immersive. I play WRE and ERE exclusively as the idea of trying to re-write history to save the "glory of Rome" just appeals for some reason. I do have big tilt to the subject matter - the fall of Rome is fascinating. It's the best historical TW and my favourite TW of all. LOTW produces great content but was dead wrong about Attila. Attila has several factions that basically ignore this challenge and allow you to build an empire safely away from the major dangers, but most factions are made to deal with them in order to win. Most other TW games have introduced some sort of late game challenge to temporarily check player expansion, but Attila is the game that does the most to bring that challenge front and center, making the act of surviving it the primary challenge of the game. Then there's the survival aspect, which is subjective, but Attila is definitely focused more on surviving and maintaining your lands through the late game instead of just always expanding and painting the map. I've never personally had issues with it and they've patched it up quite a bit since then, but some players still complain of issues getting it to run.
